RECALL ALERT: ERGOTRON TELEVISION WALL MOUNTS

On January 24, 2014, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with Ergotron Inc. of Saint Paul, Minnesota, announced the voluntary recall of Ergotron’s popular television wall mounts. It has been reported that the weld between the “VESA” style mounting plate and the mounting ring can fail, causing the monitor or TV to fall.  This poses a serious crush hazard and risk of injury to bystanders – particularly children that may be playing underneath a mounted television.

These television wall mounts have been sold at AAFES, h.h. Gregg, Sam’s Club, Walmart, and independent retailers nationwide specializing in electronic supplies, and online at www.amazon.com. Sales of these mounts were between February 2012 to January 2013 at an approximate sale price between $50 and $400.

The television wall mount is adjustable and mainly designed for flat panel displays and televisions. This mount is made up of three main parts including a wall mount plate, an extendable and adjustable arm, and a monitor plate. The recall includes the following model and part numbers:

As a parent, safety advocate and trial lawyer, I am continually troubled by the fact that manufacturers continue to sell products that endanger the lives of us all. Manufacturers, in their zeal to get products on the market, often cut corners and overlook safety when designing and manufacturing products. Manufacturers have an obligation and opportunity to thoroughly assess product safety before the launch of a product.
