Recall Alert : 2014 Camry and Avalon Models Due to Incorrectly Manufactured Suspension Arm

On November 7, 2014, Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) began recalling certain model year 2014 Toyota Camry, Camry HV, Avalon, and Avalon HV vehicles equipped with 16-inch and 17-inch rims. In the affected vehicles, the left-side front suspension lower arm may have been incorrectly manufactured.  As a result, the left side lower arm may not have enough clamping surface area for one of the bolts that secures the lower arm to the lower ball joint.

Because of the insufficient clamping force, the lower arm may separate from the ball joint, increasing the risk of a crash.  The potential number of units affected is estimated at 5,650.  No injuries or accidents have been reported at this time.

If you or someone you know has been affected by this defect, we urge you to stop using your vehicle immediately.  Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the left side lower arm, free of charge. I would urge you, however, to be proactive and contact Toyota directly to find out if your vehicle is affected by this recall.  The recall began on December 12, 2014.

Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331.  Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to their website.

As a consumer, safety advocate, and trial lawyer, I am continually troubled by the fact that manufacturers and retailers continue to sell dangerous products. Manufacturers, in their zeal to get products on the market, often cut corners and overlook safety when designing and manufacturing products. Manufacturers have an obligation and opportunity to thoroughly assess product safety before the launch of a product. It should not take a person to get injured for a manufacturer to make a product safe.
