Recall Alert: Staples’ Bermond Manager’s Chair Recalled Due to Fall Hazard

On July 11, 2013, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in cooperation with Staples, announced the voluntary recall of the Bermond Fabric Manager’s Chairs due to a fall hazard endangering consumers.  Consumers can fall out of the chair due to the base of the chair breaking.  As of the time of the recall, Staples had received 41 reports of the chairs’ bases breaking and at least consumers having sustained injuries due to falls from the chairs.

These chairs were sold at Staples stores nationwide, and online at www.Staples.com, www.Quill.com and other online retailers from July 2011 through May 2013 for approximately $50 to $100. The chairs with unpadded arms have a five-wheel base and come in two colors: gray and burgundy.

Consumers with one of these chairs should immediately check the tag under the seat cushion to determine if the chair is subject to the recall. The chair is subject to the recall if it bears either:  Gray chair (SKU No. 924204 and Item No. 21084) or Burgundy chair (SKU No. 924203 and Item No. 21083).

Consumers should immediately stop using the chairs and contact Staples for instructions on returning the chairs for a full refund. Staples is contacting all known customers directly to provide this information. For more help, consumers are strongly encouraged to contact Staples at (888) 577-9824 or online at http://www.staples.com and go to the Warranty and Recall Info page. Quill customers can get a refund by going to Quill’s Recall Information page at http://www.quill.com.

As a consumer, safety advocate, and trial lawyer, I am continually troubled by the fact that manufacturers and retailers continue to sell dangerous products. Manufacturers, in their zeal to get products on the market, often cut corners and overlook safety when designing and manufacturing products. Manufacturers have an obligation and opportunity to thoroughly assess product safety before the launch of a product. It should not take a person to get injured for a manufacturer to make a product safe.
