Recall Alert: Yamaha Snowmobiles

On September 4, 2014, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with Yamaha Motor Corporation, U.S.A., of Cypress, Calif., announced the voluntary recall of snowmobiles due to fire hazards.  This recall affects about 2,520 units sold in the U.S.  The reason for the recall is that the fuel hose joint can leak during operation, posing a fire hazard.

There have been four reports of fuel leakage.  No injuries have been reported at this time.  These snowmobiles were sold at Yamaha snowmobile dealers nationwide from October 2013 through August 2014 for about $12,000 to $14,000.

This recall involves the model year 2014 SR10R (SRViper), SR10RXS (SRViper RTX SE), SR10L (SRViper LTX), SR10LS (SRViper LTX SE), and SR10XS (SRViper XTX) snowmobiles and model year 2015 SR10LS (SRViper LTX SE) snowmobiles. They were sold in a variety of red, black, blue, and white color combinations. The VIN is stamped on the tunnel near the right-side footrest.

The letter E in the 10th position of the VIN indicates that the unit was made in the 2014 model year, and the letter F in the 10th position indicates that the unit was made in the 2015 model year. The model number can be found on the lower left and right cowling just below the word “YAMAHA.”

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled snowmobiles and contact their local Yamaha dealer to schedule a free repair.  Yamaha is contacting its customers directly.  For more information, please contact Yamaha at (800) 962-7926 anytime or online at www.yamahamotorsports.com and under the Sports tab, subcategory Snowmobile,

As a consumer, safety advocate, and trial lawyer, I am continually troubled by the fact that manufacturers and retailers continue to sell dangerous products.  Manufacturers, in their zeal to get products on the market, often cut corners and overlook safety when designing and manufacturing products. Manufacturers have an obligation and opportunity to thoroughly assess product safety before the launch of a product.  It should not take a person to get injured for a manufacturer to make a product safe.
