Recall Alert: Ladybug Child Chairs Recalled Due to Lead Toxicity

On July 31, 2013, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in cooperation with Far East Brokers and Consultants Inc., announced the voluntary recall of Leisure Ways Brands Kids Outdoor Furniture, specifically the red ladybug-themed kids’ metal-framed outdoor furniture, due to the toxicity of the red surface paint on the furniture. The recall of this furniture set, which includes a camp chair, folding chair, moon chair, double-seat swing chair and a patio set that includes two chairs, a table and an umbrella, is due to the excessive levels of lead found in the red surface paint on the furniture.

These levels of lead within the surface paint are considered to be a violation of the federal lead paint standard. Exposure to excessive amounts of lead increases the probability of attracting lead poisoning. Lead, particularly toxic to children, interferes with the development of the nervous system, causing potentially permanent learning and behavior disorders. Some symptoms may include abdominal pain, confusion, headache, anemia, irritability, seizures, coma, and in some severe cases, even death.

The furniture was sold at Weis Markets, wholesale distributors, grocery and drug stores in the United States from January 2013 to May 2013.  About 14,000 of these defective items were sold.

Consumers are urged to immediately take the recalled outdoor furniture away from their children and return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. The recall number associated with this model is 13-255.  Consumers should contact Far East Brokers at (888) 753-9040 or online at www.fareastbrokers.com.

As a parent, child safety advocate, and trial lawyer, I am continually troubled by the fact that manufacturers and retailers continue to sell dangerous products. Manufacturers, in their zeal to get products on the market, often cut corners and overlook safety when designing and manufacturing products. Manufacturers have an obligation and opportunity to thoroughly assess product safety before the launch of a product. It should not take a child to getting exposed to toxic levels of lead for a manufacturer to make a product safe.
