Recall Alert: Kolcraft Jeep Liberty Strollers Recalled

On June 19, 2013 the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with Kolcraft Enterprises Inc., of Chicago, Illinois, announced the voluntary recall of five models of their Jeep Liberty branded strollers due to a serious injury risk posed by the use of the stroller. The injury risk is presented when the inner tube of the tire on the stroller ruptures causing the wheel rim to fracture and fly off as a projectile.  Kolcraft and the Consumer Product Safety Commission have received 39 reports of the wheel flying off as a projectile causing injury to children in the stroller, adults in the vicinity of the stroller and damage to property adjacent to the stroller.

The recall involves five models of the Kolcraft Jeep Liberty strollers, which were manufactured between June 2010 and September 2011.  The models affected include: JL031, JL032, JL034, JL035 and JL036.  Consumers can locate the model number and date of manufacture on a white tag on the rear upper center of each seatback pad. These strollers were sold both online, and at national retailers like Burlington Coat Factory, Sears, and Toys R Us from June 2010 through June 2013 for prices ranging from $150 to $180

Consumers are urged to immediately stop using the stroller, and to contact Kolcraft Enterprises to receive free replacement wheels.  Customers can contact Kolcraft directly at (800) 453-7673 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday or online at www.Kolcraft.com.

As a parent, child safety advocate, and trial lawyer, I am continually troubled by the fact that manufacturers continue to sell products that endanger the lives of children. Manufacturers, in their zeal to get products on the market, often cut corners and overlook safety when designing and manufacturing products. Manufacturers have an obligation and opportunity to thoroughly assess product safety before the launch of a product.  It should not take a child getting injured for a ma  nufacturer to make a product safe.
