Recall Alert: BreatheableBaby Infant Sleep Sacks Pose Choking Hazard

On October 29, 2013, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with BreathableBaby LLC, of Minnetonka, Minn., announced the voluntary recall of one lot of The BreathableBaby BreathableSack due to the risk of infant choking and death.  The popular baby garment was sold at various stores nationwide, numerous online retailers and at www.breathablebaby.com from June 2012 through August 2013.

The recall of the popular infant garment is due to faulty zipper pull-tabs and sliders on the front and sides of the garment.  When the zippers are pulled closed, the pull-tabs and sliders can become detached, posing a choking hazard.  The BreathableBaby BreathableSack is designed for infants to wear while they sleep, making this product defect especially dangerous to children.  If a zipper pull-tab or slider becomes detached while an infant is sleeping, the potential for serious injury or death is drastically increased.

This recall affects lot number 124, which was manufactured on 4/17/2012.  The lot number and manufacture date can be found on a tag sewn inside the BreathableSack where the infant’s right foot would be located.  Tags of recalled products will read, “Date of Manufacture: 04/17/2012, Lot No. 124.”  Approximately 15,000 defective units were sold.

Consumers should stop using the BreathableSacks immediately and contact BreathableBaby for a replacement garment at (877) 827-4442 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. CT Monday through Thursday or online at www.breathablebaby.com by clicking on Recall Information.

As a parent, child safety advocate, and trial lawyer, I am continually troubled by the fact that manufacturers and retailers continue to sell dangerous products. Manufacturers, in their zeal to get products on the market, often cut corners and overlook safety when designing and manufacturing products. Manufacturers have an obligation and opportunity to thoroughly assess product safety before the launch of a product. It should not take a child to get injured or killed for a manufacturer to make a product safe.
