On November 7, 2013, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in cooperation with Vans Inc., announced the voluntary recall of Vans’ AV Edict hooded jackets for boys, specifically sizes S, M, L and XL in black cotton and black canvas, due to the drawstrings in the hood around the neck area that pose a strangulation hazard to young children.
The Van’s hooded jackets do not conform with federal guidelines for drawstrings in children’s upper outerwear issued by the CPSC in July of 2011. These drawstrings are in the hood around the neck area and pose a strangulation hazard to young children in situations that arise from typical use of the jacket.
These jackets were sold at Vans stores nationwide and online at vans.com between September, 2012 and September, 2013 for $90. About 2,400 of these hooded jackets were sold.
Consumers are urged to immediately take these jackets away from their children and return it to the place of purchase for a full refund or for a repair. Consumers can contact Vans Inc. at (800) 817-0618 anytime or online at www.vans.com and click on Recall Info for more information.
As a parent, child safety advocate, and trial lawyer, I am continually troubled by the fact that manufacturers and retailers continue to sell dangerous products. Manufacturers, in their zeal to get products on the market, often cut corners and overlook safety when designing and manufacturing products. Manufacturers have an obligation and opportunity to thoroughly assess product safety before the launch of a product. It should not take a child to getting injured for a manufacturer to make a product safe.
The Quinn Law Group, LLC, is a preeminent personal injury law firm with offices conveniently located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Cherry Hill, New Jersey.
